The Coopers take Freddie on holiday!

Peter & Joan write:

Continuing the Blog theme of where our WT’s have been, each year in September we take Freddie and the caravan to a very pleasant site near Muchelney in Somerset. Its called Thorney Lakes and has excellent dog walking around the site, with 4 fields and a 5 acre fishing lake that can be explored. The pitches are amongst a cider apple orchard, and the site facilities are probably the most eco friendly that you could come across.

You may recall 2 years ago when there were severe floods on the Somerset levels and there were a number of TV news reports of boats taking residents down a road where there was a totally submerged car. Well thats the road that you use to get to the site! Thankfully this year we had the best weather we could have hoped for.

Anyway, we take the opportunity to visit family who live in both Somerset and Dorset, and the site is about half way between. But for dog friendly places, we can recommend the King Alfred Inn at Burrowbridge who allow dogs into their restaurant and serve superb meals. Its right next to the river Parrett so there is a walk along the river bank and also Burrow Mump, an 80ft high mound with an incomplete chapel on its summit. I found, with Freddie, this was an excellent way of walking of the excesses of lunch!

But far and away Freddies favourite place is Brean Sands, which is just south of Weston-super-Mare. Along with the adjoining Berrow sands, there is a stretch of 6 miles of sand that you can take the cars on and dogs are allowed all year. The only downside is that the tide goes out a long way and uncovers mud flats, so staying above the high water mark is the best bet.
